Lake Ponchatrain

14" Remora caught amidst cruising sharks

The lakes in Louisiana are varied. Near New Orleans and the coastal areas, most of the lakes are brackish. Further inland they are freshwater. But we mostly have the "OK" water as I call it, in Lake Ponchatrain and those lakes further South.  So you can catch anything and most of the fish have adapted to eat "whatever".

I have caught saltwater Croakers and Trout on worms and crickets and caught freshwater Bass and Perch on good ole market shrimp. You'll generally get a similar response with lures.

The usual lake catch is lots of Trout, both White Trout and Speckled Trout, Croakers, Black Drum, Redfish, Sheephead, Pinfish, Hybrid Bass, varieties of Catfish, Sun Perch, White Perch and OOPS!... I forgot Sharks!

Because of the warm sandy bottoms, Sting Rays are also often caught. PLEASE BE NICE if you catch one! Sting Rays are incredibly beneficial to our watery environments.  Take a pair of pliers and break the stinger at the base of their tail. They are then harmless... please set them free. Their stringer will grow back!
